Oak Island & Northwest Angle Tour (6 hour minimum)
Tour north across the lake taking in the views of the lake and wildlife. View historic Massacre Island, stop at our sister resort, Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge for a lunch and then venture on to Fort St. Charles a historic fur trading post established in 1732. After a tour of the trading post swing by Young’s Bay and take your picture with the most northern point marker. This spot marks the most northern point in the contiguous forty-eight states and is the only point in the United States, apart from Alaska, that is north of the 49th parallel. After a day of enjoyment, make your way back to Sportsman’s Lodge and take in the views of the islands and waters of Lake of the Woods. (On a low water level year please keep in mind the boat may not be able to dock at the fort but you can certainly drive by and stop in the channel for viewing.)
South Shore History & Wildlife Tour
Tour along Wheeler’s Point, stop and take a stroll on Pine Island. Venture off to Zippel Bay State Park to take in another spectacular view of the park, beach and abundant wildlife. After enjoying some time at the park relax on a leisure ride back to the loge along the Lake of the Woods south shore.
River & More Tour
Tour along the Rainy River to the town of Baudette taking in the views of Minnesota on one side and Canada on the other. Stop just east of Baudette at Timbermill Park to stretch your legs, let the kids play at the playground or enjoy a snack. Enjoy a stop at Willie Walleye Park and take a picture with Willie the Walleye the 2.5 ton walleye statue. Take in some small town shopping or take a stroll along the walking path through Baudette.

Relax at the Beach
Take in a tour of the South Shore or Rainy River or head right to the beach for a full day of fun, sun and relaxation! Choose one of two beautiful beaches, Pine Island just four miles away from the lodge, or see more of Lake of the Woods and tour twenty miles north to Garden Island. Bring a picnic lunch and soak in the sun!
South Shore to Warroad (6 hour minimum)
Tour along the south shore to Warroad, MN. Take in the views along the way including Zippel Bay, Morris Point, Long Point and stop at the port along the town of Warroad. The docking area is located along a beautiful park and the Seven Clans Casino for your enjoyment. Enjoy lunch at a dockside restaurant. Let the kids play at the playground, try your luck at the Seven Clans Casino, take a dip in the all sand pool, or just sit and relax before making your way back.

Canoe/Kayak
Paddle around! Bring your canoe or kayak and enjoy a leisurely trip around Zippel Bay, the Winter Road River, or any of the other small tributaries to the Rainy. Mushroom Picking
Taste the wild harvest of Minnesota! Morel mushrooms are widely considered the most prized of wild mushrooms and can be found in the early spring in many areas of our county. Early May through the end of the month is the standard time for harvest. The tasty fungi (our state mushroom) grow best in the ruins of dead elm trees and damp aspen woods. Before eating any wild mushrooms, it is best to consult at least two field guides to verify the species. For more information contact our local state park representative by clicking here.
Birding
Lake of the Woods County is strategically located on the Mississippi flyway, which brings thousands of migratory species into the area each spring and fall. The landscape provides habitat for many highly sought after species, including the Great Gray Owl, Spruce Grouse, Golden Winged Warbler, and the endangered Piping Plover. A state park, managed forests, and the lake itself offer virtually unlimited opportunities for exploration and enjoyment. Wildflower Viewing
Experience the purity of the north woods in bloom! The Williams Garden Club has identified a route of area plants in bloom, including the Minnesota state flower – the Showy Lady Slipper – which is celebrated each year as it enters peak bloom in June. Oak Harbor Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole course located along the Rainy River 8.5 miles north of Baudette on highway 172, 4 miles from Sportsman’s Lodge Rainy River. Wild Harvest
Wild fruits found in northern Minnesota are used in various food products, including jams, jellies and syrups. Blueberries, juneberries, huckleberries, pincherries, and raspberries all ripen from the mid to end of July. Chokecherries are ready mid-August, and highbush cranberries ripen in September. Acorns, hazelnuts, and walnuts are typically gathered in the fall as well.
County Museum
Relive the past at the Lake of the Woods County museum. With a large display area, audio-visual programs, and a comprehensive library – including microfilm of the county newspapers from 1907-1960 – it’s a great way to learn about the far north of Minnesota. Exhibits focus on the geological formation of Lake of the Woods, the natural history of the area, native cultures, the great fire of 1910, commercial fishing, logging, and the pharmaceutical industry. Clementson Rapids
The Clementson rapids are located eight miles east of Baudette on highway 11. The Rapid River, a tributary of the Rainy River, gives visitors a spectacular display in the spring as it empties into the Rainy during peak flowage. The rocky shoreline along the rapids is a beautiful place for a picnic.

Three summer plays are featured plus a children’s theatre/workshop production featuring theWST Popcorn Players. Each March brings a new season featuring dinner theatre presented at the Warroad American Legion Club. Hunting
Many hunting seasons in Minnesota open in September, including early Canada goose, ruffed grouse and ducks. Archery season opens for whitetail in September as well, while rifle season opens in early November. Bear season is open in September through October. Norris Camp
Historic Norris Camp is a preserved civilian conservation corps camp from the 1930’s. Now the headquarters of the Red Lake Wildlife Management Area, tours are available from the DNR staff at the camp year round. Norris Camp was established under one of president Roosevelt’s “New Deal” programs in 1935 and employed close to 200 men and officers performing a variety of tasks.
Wilderness Drive
The second largest state forest in Minnesota, Beltrami Island State Forest offers wilderness lovers nearly 670,000 acres of marshes, bogs, and sand ridges to explore. Various routes have been established to allow visitors to comfortably enjoy the vast wilderness, including the Homesteaders’ Drive and the Fall Color Drive. Lake of the Woods Drifters Snowmobile Club
Snowmobiling
The 500 miles of groomed trails in the Lake of the Woods system are truly “wilderness trails” with less than 5 miles of ditch trails in the entire system. With the Rainy River and the lake itself included in the trail system, nearly unlimited ice riding is available for your sledding enjoyment. Ice Skating
Winter is a proud tradition in northern Minnesota, which has bred a passion for all things ice, including skating! Local arenas have “open skating” set aside to allow area residents and visitors time to use the ice usually reserved for hockey teams. XC Skiing/Snowshoe – Ski Trail Map
Whether you’re a serious cross country skier, or a beginner just out for the afternoon, the Lake of the Woods area offers skiers of all levels an opportunity for enjoyment. Bring your tent and make your own trail to experience a true north sunrise over the purity of a snow covered forest in our hundreds of thousands of acres of public land, or take a quick trip around the groomed trails of Zippel Bay State Park. Snowshoers are welcome too!
Monthly Moonlight Cross Country Ski Evenings

Sledding
Hit the slopes with the king of Lake of the Woods – Willie Walleye! From Willie’s perch at the top of the hill near downtown Baudette, you’ll have a great ride down to the Baudette Bay. And you can warm up after a long day playing in the snow with a specialty coffee from the Cafe X just down main avenue. While you’re there, check out all of the great specialty shops in Baudette, carrying great north woods products and souvenirs!
