Mushroom Picking

Taste the wild harvest of Minnesota! Morel mushrooms are widely considered the most prized of wild mushrooms and can be found in the early spring in many areas of our county. Early May through the end of the month is the standard time for harvest. The tasty fungi (our state mushroom) grow best in the ruins of dead elm trees and damp aspen woods. Before eating any wild mushrooms, it is best to consult at least two field guides to verify the species. For more information contact our local state park representative by clicking here.

Birding

Lake of the Woods County is strategically located on the Mississippi flyway, which brings thousands of migratory species into the area each spring and fall. The landscape provides habitat for many highly sought after species, including the Great Gray Owl, Spruce Grouse, Golden Winged Warbler, and the endangered Piping Plover. A state park, managed forests, and the lake itself offer virtually unlimited opportunities for exploration and enjoyment. Contact our local state park ranger or the Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau for a birding map and checklist.

Wildflower Viewing

Experience the purity of the north woods in bloom! The Williams Garden Club has identified a route of area plants in bloom, including the Minnesota state flower – the Showy Lady Slipper – which is celebrated each year as it enters peak bloom in June. Snowmobiling
The 500 miles of groomed trails in the Lake of the Woods system are truly “wilderness trails” with less than 5 miles of ditch trails in the entire system. With the Rainy River and the lake itself included in the trail system, nearly unlimited ice riding is available for your sledding enjoyment. Many of the trails are maintained by local snowmobile clubs, and current conditions are updated weekly. For more information and trail maps Click Here.

Northwest Angle Edge Rider’s Snowmobile Club’s Annual Progressive Dinner – Participate by snowmobile or by car.

Local arenas have “open skating” set aside to allow area residents and visitors time to use the ice usually reserved for hockey teams. Click Here for available open skating times at the Baudette Arena or call 218-634-1319 and Williams 218-634-3271 Arena.
